Universal Beijing Resort Is Building an International World Class Theme Park and Resort According to the Capital’s High Standard Environmentally Friendly Construction Concepts

Beijing, April 11 - Currently, construction of the initial phase of Universal Beijing Resort, which include the Universal Studio theme park, Universal CityWalk Beijing, Universal Studios Grand Hotel and a Nuo Resort Hotel, is moving forward in full swing. The resort will not only bring new recreational and vacation experiences to visitors, but also help the innovation and development of tourism culture in the sub-center. Universal Beijing Resort attaches great importance to environmental protection throughout its construction process, and is using many innovative and best-practice techniques to build a first-class theme park and resort that maintains a positive ecological environment.

A project official said, “Under the care and leadership of the Municipal Committee and the Municipal Government, and with the support and guidance of the municipal and district authorities, the project seamlessly implements the requirements of the sub city center’s green city construction from planning to construction. With environment-friendly and sustainable development as a foundation, the project strives to implement top-notch international management standards, ensuring green, ecological, energy saving and environment-friendly management concept, and making unremitting efforts to build a first-class harmonious and livable city. Universal Beijing Resort will work hard to safeguard the blue skies, white clouds, clear water and green mountains in the capital, and elevate the happiness of citizens under the blue sky."

The entire area of Universal Beijing Resort Project covers 4 square kilometers. Factors such as the vast construction area, extensive packages and sub-projects, and multiple construction entities working at the same time all pose challenges for the management of green construction. Universal Beijing Resort has strengthened its environmental protection management system and institutional system, increased investment in environmental protection funds, manpower and material resources, and implemented relevant policies of national and local environmental protection to make sure the project progresses smoothly.

Implement dust control adhering to international standards; Investment reaches 300 million RMB within half a year

Universal Beijing Resort uses fog gun to reduce dust concentration

Since the start of construction in 2018, Universal Beijing Resort has set up a task force for dust improvement, with the general manager of the company directly serving as the head of the group. The resort has set up an Environmental Management System Standard for the whole project, matching Beijing’s current guidelines and in line with international standards. The resort also employs a professional third-party environmental supervision company to directly supervise the design, installation and commissioning of on-site environmental protection facilities, the effect of dust control measures, and the pollution prevention and control actions of construction units.

Universal Beijing Resort’s effort in site road hardening and bare soil coverage is most prominent amongst all dust prevention work. By the end of 2018, Universal Beijing Resort has built a total of 28 kilometers of hardened roads. In order to ensure the cleaning effect of the hardened roads, Universal Beijing Resort has especially hired a professional third party to carry out road cleaning and dust control operations.

At the same time, the green net used for soil covering in Universal Beijing Resort has reached 28.6 million square meters, equivalent to repeatedly covering the whole resort site seven times. The integrated green construction site greatly reduces the floating dust generated during construction.

In addition, the resort has also invested in extensive mechanical equipment such as sprinklers and tower crane sprinklers to implement dust reduction and removal. Since the beginning of construction, the total amount of funds invested in dust control has reached more than 300 million yuan.

Soil resource conversion rate reaches 97% through localized and innovative disposal technology

Universal Beijing Resort is the first to set up a construction waste recycling line in China

With the health and safety of visitors and the creation of an international first-class theme park and resort in mind, Universal Beijing Resort requires the soil in the entire 4 square kilometer site to be pollution-free. Not only the original soil on site must pass pollutant detection and reach required standards, but purchased soil must also be tested and qualified before entering the site.

Based on the geo-survey, about 2.5 million m3 miscellaneous fill in the site mixed soil, construction waste, solid waste and grass. The earthwork volume equals to pile up 10m high soil on 35 soccer fields. Before mass grading, in-site soil waste was screened in grid. The polluted soil was either processed with harmless treatment or transported outside for disposal, while the qualified soil was recycled.

In terms of soil treatment, the resource conversion rate of Universal Beijing Resort has reached 97%, directly benefiting from the country’s first in-situ soil treatment line for construction waste developed by the resource processing company for this project. The treatment line can convert large blocks of construction waste excavated on site into soil that can be directly used for backfilling, further avoiding a series of environmental problems, such as road debris, traffic congestion, tail gas pollution, land occupation and construction waste that could have been caused in the construction process. This innovative process is the first of its kind in China, and has set an example in the construction industry of the capital.

Rainwater collection and reutilization, expected to save 380,000t tap water

Reserved pond of Universal Beijing Resort Project realizes the functions of rainwater collection and storage

During the construction period, onsite processed water is required to meet national standard requirements and is used for dust control, road cleansing and irrigation, therefore realizing the purposes of zero waste water disposal and water resources conservation.

Wastewater produced from cleaning concrete transport pumps and transportation vehicles on the construction site can be repeatedly used for washing equipment or spraying dust after being treated by a multi-stage sedimentation tank. Six reserved ponds are specially set up in the resort for rainwater collection and utilization. During the construction period, the project is expected to reduce wastewater discharge by 380,000 tons, saving 380,000 tons of tap water.

From “green construction site” to “green park”, holding long-term perspective

Since early stages of project development and construction, Universal Beijing Resort has focused on creating a top-notch entertainment experience as well as bringing another green park to the sub city center through various innovative eco-technologies. Currently, innovative measures for further realizing the “sponge function”, water cleaning, environmental energy technology, and the overall ecosystem within the park are in the planning.

Once open, Universal Parks & Resorts will operate Universal Beijing Resort at a world-class level across all areas, including sustainability.

A project official said, “Universal Beijing Resort Project will continue to adhere to the concept of sustainable development of ‘world vision, international standards, Chinese characteristics and high-end positioning’, a vision in accordance with the ‘joint action to build a beautiful China with blue sky, green earth and clear water’ as set out in this year’s government work report. This way, the project is conscientiously fulfilling the responsibility and obligation of enterprises to manage environmental pollution, striving to become excellent corporate in the city’s sub center, and making efforts to turn Universal Beijing Resort Project into a pilot project that embodies excellent environmental protection, science and technology, humanities and creativity.”
